Vatican unworried by Pope's exclusion from Time top-100 list
Posted on Sat May 03 2008

The director of the Vatican press office has said that he was not dismayed to find Pope Benedict XVI missing from a list of the world's 100 most influential people, as evaluated by Time magazine.

The Time list included political leaders, entertainers, athletes, and authors. But although the magazine's list appeared just after the papal visit to the US, which had boosted his public profile in America, Pope Benedict was not named.

“I'm very happy that the Pope isn't on the list," said Father Federico Lombardi, the Vatican spokesman, "because they have used criteria that have absolutely nothing to do with the evaluation of the Pope's religious and moral authority." He pointed out that Time had compared public figures "with very different characteristics: there are actors, tennis players, and so on."

In appraising the influence of these individuals, Father Lombardi said, Time had evidently measured by standards "that have absolutely nothing to do with the evaluation of the Pope's moral and religious authority."

Two influential religious leaders did appear on the Time list: the Dalai Lama and Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople. Father Lombardi conceded that the appearance of their names was "another matter."
